Backup/Restore issues with Symantec Netbackup 7.5.0.6

Troubleshooting

Problem

OnBar backup or restore using Symantec Netbackup 7.5.0.6 can run into problems, a restore might even fail completely.

Symptom

During onbar backups it has been observed that, when using the BAR_PERFORMANCE, at the end of a backup there would be garbage dumped into baract.log file instead of performance data.

An onbar restore can fail entirely receiving garbage instead of valid chunk data from the Netbackup client. An Informix server crash might be observed too. BAR_PERFORMANCE is not a condition for this problem.

Cause

The reason for this is a file descriptor mixup in the Netbackup XBSA library during its logging or error reporting. The triggering condition was a missing bp.conf file, either in default location or user informix' or root's home directory.

Symantec Etrack for this: ET3474215

Resolving The Problem

Obtain a version from Symantec with ET3474215 fixed.

Creating such bp.conf files, in locations mentioned and as copies of or links to an existing one, turned out to be a workaround. This at least should be true and had been found for backups.
