Integration Explorer not loading after WebSphere MQ upgrade

Troubleshooting

Problem

After upgrading the fix-pack level of your WebSphere MQ Explorer, you find that the IBM Integration Bus (IIB) or WebSphere Message Broker (WMB) Explorer plug-in is no longer loading. This issue was originally reported after an upgrade to WebSphere MQ V7.5.0.3; however, it is known to affect at least three different levels of WebSphere MQ Explorer: WebSphere MQ Version 7.0.1 WebSphere MQ Version 7.1 WebSphere MQ Version 7.5

Cause

The plug-in loading facility of Eclipse p2 fails to load all the plug-ins for the Integration Explorer (Eclipse typically loads any plug-ins from the 'dropins' or 'links' directory during startup).

In this case, the IIB installer places a link file in the 'links' folder in the MQ Explorer eclipse directory. This link file points to the Integration Explorer plug-in files, which should be loaded when the MQ Explorer starts. When an MQ Explorer fix pack is installed, the files in the 'MQExplorer' directory are replaced. When the MQ Explorer (Eclipse) is restarted, the Integration Explorer link file should be found again and the plug-in(s) should be reloaded.

However, after the upgrade, the p2 repository loader and Eclipse equinox simpleconfigurator fail to load all the plug-ins from this directory, including those for the Integration Explorer.

Resolving The Problem

The failure to load the plug-in occurs at the Eclipse level, and you can solve the problem by forcing Eclipse to re-initialize the Integration Explorer plug-in correctly:

  1. Navigate to the directory '<MQExplorer Installation>/eclipse/links'
  2. Remove the file 'com.ibm.wmadmin.broker.explorer.link' (keep a copy in a safe, backup location)
  3. Start the MQ Explorer with the '-c' option (strmqcfg -c)
  4. When the MQ Explorer is fully loaded, close it
  5. Return the file 'com.ibm.wmadmin.broker.explorer.link' to the links directory
  6. Start the MQ Explorer with the '-c' option.

The Integration Explorer plug-in should now load successfully.

Note:
It is possible that you have two links locations:
  • <MQExplorer Installation>\links
  • <MQExplorer Installation>\eclipse\links
If this is the case, take care in returning the correct link file to the correct location. If both are in use, remove both files in step 2 and return both files in step 5.
