How to select tasks for the Change Management Integration

Question & Answer

Question

How do you select tasks for the Change Management Integration (CMI) from the IBM Rational ClearCase native GUIs?

Cause

This feature is available only for the ClearCase native GUIs.

Answer

If you work in a ClearCase native GUI, such as xclearcase or the ClearCase Explorer, you can configure CMI to open a task selection window for certain ClearCase operations that would otherwise fail due to missing task associations.

Base ClearCase

If you are working in base ClearCase, the CMI configuration on participating brtypes must include a valid query uri for the change management provider. Once configured, if you attempt to checkin a version on such a brtype instance that has no task association, CMI will run the specified query and display a list of tasks returned by the provider. Selecting one or more tasks will cause CMI to create the requested associations on the version and at the provider. The checkin will then proceed. Note that if you do not select a task, the checkin will fail due to the missing task association.

UCM

If you are working in a UCM view, the CMI configuration on participating streams must include a valid query uri for the change management provider. Once configured, if you attempt to set an existing activity that has no task association or if you attempt to create a new activity, CMI will run the specified query and display a list of tasks returned by the provider. Selecting one or more tasks will cause CMI to create the requested associations on the activity and at the provider, allowing the setactivity to proceed. Note that if you do not select a task, setactivity will fail due to the missing task association, whereas for mkactivity the activity will be created but not set.
