Management class rebinding for VMware data explained

Question & Answer

Question

How does rebinding apply to VMware backup data on the Tivoli Storage Manager server ?

Answer

Management Class rebinding for VMware backup data happens under the same conditions as for individual files as it is the group leader object stored on the Tivoli Storage Manager server that is the management class reference for all objects that represent the VM guest backup data.

Therefore, if the management class is changed, either because the default domain management class is changed or by using the VMMC option, the new backup data AND all the previous backup images will be bound to the new management class.

For example,

1. The original situation :

dsmc query VM vm1 -ina

#
Backup Date
Mgmt class
size
Type
A/I
Virtual Machine
1
timestamp 1
VM_DATA
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1
2
timestamp 2
VM_DATA
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1
3
timestamp 3
VM_DATA
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1

2. Perform a backup with another management class specification :

dsmc backup VM vm1 -mode=ifi -vmmc=VM_OTHER

3. We will see :

dsmc query VM vm1 -ina

#
Backup Date
Mgmt class
size
Type
A/I
Virtual Machine
1
timestamp 1
VM_OTHER
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1
2
timestamp 2
VM_OTHER
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1
3
timestamp 3
VM_OTHER
39.06 GB
IFINCR
I
vm1
4
timestamp 4
VM_OTHER
39.06 GB
IFINCR
A
