ANR8311E An I/O error occurred while accessing drive <name>

Troubleshooting


Problem

A tape is mounted in a drive, but Tivoli Storage Manager reports ANR8311E and ANR1411W error messages and changes the tape access from read-write to read-only. The Tivoli Storage Manager server is configured with a TS3200 library and LTO-4 tape drives.

Symptom

The following errors are reported in the Tivoli Storage Manager activity log :

10/24/2013 06:45:28 ANR8311E An I/O error occurred while accessing drive DRIVE_1 (mt0.0.0.4) for WRITE operation, errno = 0, rc = 1. (PROCESS: nn)
10/24/2013 06:45:28 ANR1411W Access mode for volume TSM001L4 now set to "read-only" due to write error. (PROCESS: nn)

Diagnosing The Problem

Examine the Windows system event log for errors that precede the time of the error in the Tivoli Storage Manager log. For example :

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort0.

In this example, the Windows event log entry error is logged one second prior to when Tivoli Storage Manager logged the ANR8311E and ANR1411W errors.

The error recorded in the Windows event log is reported by the LSI_SAS source, to which the library and drives are connected.
The following error might also be logged :

Description:
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

In this case, the TS3200 library was configured with two LTO-4 tape drives. Both tape drives were configured with a control path with the library not licensed for control path failover.

Resolving The Problem

Configure the library to use only one control path. For example :

In this case, after configuring the library with only one control path, no further LSI_SAS errors were logged and no further ANR8311E and ANR1411W errors were reported in the Tivoli Storage Manager log.
