ANS1459E VSS Automated System Recovery (ASR) failed

Technote (troubleshooting)


Problem(Abstract)

Windows 2008 R2 system restored using ASR-based recovery using Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE). The ASR restore fails.

Symptom

The are no errors during the backup operation. The following errors are logged during the ASR restore operation :


ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
TSM function name : InitializeForRestore()
TSM function : 'InitializeForRestore() failed with error code . -2147212542'
TSM return code : -2147212542
TSM file : asrutil.cpp (1523)
ANS1459E VSS Automated System Recovery (ASR) failed.


Cause

Unsupported configuration


Diagnosing the problem

  • Verify the level of the Tivoli Storage Manager client. It must be at minimum 6.2.2.0 level for both the backup and restore operations.
  • Verify that the backup completed without errors
  • Verify that the "TESTFLAG SKIPVSSASR" option is not specified in the client option file (dsm.opt) or specified as a command parameter with "-TESTFLAG=SKIPVSSASR"
  • Verify whether the Windows 2008 R2 machine firmware interface is based on Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) rather than Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).

Resolving the problem

In this case, the Windows machine was based on EFI, which is an unsupported environment with Tivoli Storage Manager V6.x clients.
