Technote (troubleshooting)


Problem(Abstract)

Customer has recently installed SPSS Statistics 21 or 22 software on a Windows platform.

The software has been performing normally; however, for what ever reason, the program has ended abnormally, froze, etc., and has been improperly closed, by using the Windows Task Manager to end the program.

Environment

All supported Windows Desktop Operating Systems
Statistics 21
Statistics 22

Resolving the problem

[Summary of tasks to be completed below]
1) Create a backup of your Windows Registry
2) Delete back up copies of the 'core' & 'UI' settings when Statistics program has ended abnormally or is terminated by the Windows Task Manager
3) Modifying the follow Windows Register key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\com\ibm\/S/P/S/S\/Statistics

[Steps to complete]

{Windows XP}


    Select Start
    Select Run...
    Type the following in the Run Windows Dialog Box:
    regedit
    Click OK

{Windows Vista Desktops and above}


    Open the Start menu, click the Start button Picture of the Start buttonin the lower-left corner of your screen. Or, press the Windows logo key Picture of the Windows logo keyon your keyboard.
    Type the following In the Search Box:
    regedit
    Press the ENTER key



Create a backup of your registry by clicking on 'File' then 'Export'. Place the backup in a safe place on your hard drive in case you need to restore your registry back to its original settings.

Click the 'plus' sign next to My Computer or Computer.
Click the 'plus' sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
Click the 'plus' sign next to Software.
Click the 'plus' sign next to JavaSoft.
Click the 'plus' sign next to Prefs.
Click the 'plus' sign next to com.
Click the 'plus' sign next to ibm.
Click the 'plus' sign next to /S/P/S/S
Click the 'plus' sign next to /Statistics
Click (to highlight) the folder labeled 21.0 [some number] or 22.0 [some number]
Press the Delete key on you keyboard.
When prompted to confirm, select Yes/OK.
[Continue deleting registration keys under '/Statistics' and the version of 21.0, or 22.0, depending of the version of Statistics you have installed.

When completed deleting the backup reg keys continue with the following steps.

Select File (menu option).
Select Exit (menu option).
Re-Launch Statistics.
Your Statistics program start up time should be less than it was before the changes.
