Test Object Inspector in Rational Functional Tester is unable to fetch properties from multiple Flex applications launched in IE browser

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to fetch the properties from multiple Flex applications launched in Internet Explorer (IE) browser using Test Object Inspector (TOI) in IBM Rational Functional Tester (RFT) results inconsistency in fetching the properties.

Symptom

To recreate the issue launch multiple Flex applications in IE browser and use TOI to fetch the properties from the Flex applications.

Cause

Launching multiple flex applications in IE8 and IE9 browsers will start two instances of iexplore.exe (one for the Frame, one for the tab) and grows the number of tab processes as needed.

These two instances of iexplore.exe are causing issue while fetching properties using TOI.

Environment

Web Browsers : IE8 , IE9

This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry. For more information describing how to back up the registry, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986

  1. Close the web browsers and RFT

  2. Open Registry Editor (Start > Run > type regedit)

  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

  4. Create a new String/DWORD Value named TabProcGrowth

  5. Set the value as 0.

TabProcGrowth=0 : tabs and frames run within the same process.

  6. Launch RFT and multiple Flex enabled applications and use TOI to fetch the properties.
