Guardium S-TAP installation via GIM might fail due to install_assist on AIX

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Guardium S-TAP installation via Guardium Installation Manager (GIM) may fail due to install_assist on AIX.

Symptom

An example of the install command that may cause the error.

    ./guard-bundle-GIM-9.0.0_r43212_v90_1-aix-6.1-aix-powerpc.gim.sh -- --  dir /opt/guardium --sqlguardip <ip address>  --tapip <ip address>

An example of the resultant output

    ----------------
    Verifying archive integrity... All good.
    Uncompressing Guard BUNDLE-GIM Installer....
    perl used : /usr/bin/perl
    Installing modules ....
cp: /work/guardium/modules/central_logger.log: A file or directory in the path name does not exist.
    Installation failed
    ........................................................................
    ................................................
Please check /var/tmp/central_logger.log for more information

Cause

The install_assist application may prevent S-TAP from completing the installation.

Resolving the problem

Please check your /etc/inittab to see if the install_assist entry exists. Here is an example of install_assist entry:

    install_assist:2:wait:/usr/sbin/install_assist </dev/console >/dev/console 2>&1

If the entry exists, comment out the entry by adding a colon at the left. Here is an example:

    :install_assist:2:wait:/usr/sbin/install_assist </dev/console >/dev/console 2>&1

Reload the inittab by running init q from the command line, then retry the S-TAP install.

This will temporarily disable install_assist from starting to prevent the S-TAP installation from hanging. AIX support should be engaged to obtain information regarding a permanent fix.

[ NOTE] Please make sure to remove the colon and issue re-run the init q command after the S-TAP installation.
