How the DataPower trap event subscriptions in SNMP settings works on the IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance

Technote (FAQ)

Question

How does the trap event subscriptions feature in SNMP settings work on DataPower?

Cause

Clarification is required of the default behavior of SNMP Settings

SNMP Settings is accessible from the Web GUI in the default domain by an administrator and is accessible from the menu from the following paths
Administration>Access>>SNMP Settings and Objects>Access Settings>SNMP Settings

Answer

When the SNMP settings are configured with the default configuration, a hidden logging target in the default domain named "trap-collector" is created and subscribes to each of the configured trap-code values, which can only log results and events occurring in the default domain. This log target cannot be modified other than how it is configured over SNMP as it is a hidden log target.

The setting Enable Default Event subscriptions being set to on in the trap event subscriptions tab causes the creation of this log target. If a user wishes to work around this behavior and have more control over their log target, the user can create their own log target of the SNMP type and disable the default traps in SNMP.
