Configure for large page size in an AIX Tivoli Storage Manager environment

Question

Configuring large page sizes might be indicated in a Tivoli Storage Manager environment, see the presentation attached for details ("Improving TSM performance with 64KB/16MB Pages on AIX"). After enabling large pages, the Tivoli Storage manager server might not come up with the following messages: exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program sh because of the following errors: 0509-026 System error: Operation not permitted.

Cause

Tivoli Storage Manager servers typically are not run by the root user.

Answer

If you encounter the above messages you need to enable the instance userid to use large pages:

chuser capabilities=CAP_BYPASS_RAC_VMM,CAP_PROPAGATE,CAP_NUMA_ATTACH user_id

Where user_id is the Tivoli Storage Manager instance userid. Without this chuser step, a non-root user will not be able to use large pages.
