Additional Post IBM Cognos BI 10.2.1 FP1 Installation Upgrade Task

Troubleshooting

Problem

To allow IBM Cognos BI 10.2.1 FP1 to support server side extensible visualizations, a new report specification schema version has been introduced. Due to this, when running an IBM Cognos report through the IBM Cognos Viewer, the report specification is upgraded on a per request basis. This additional overhead may contribute to an increase in IBM Cognos Report execution time.

Symptom

IBM Cognos Reports run slower after installing the IBM Cognos 10.2.1 FP1 when compared to the original run times against the IBM Cognos 10.2 installation.

Resolving The Problem

In order to avoid the IBM Cognos Report Specification upgrade at run time, the IBM Cognos report specification can be upgraded using the following methods after performing a full content store backup using a tried, tested and true backup method.

Option 1: The IBM Cognos Reports can be opened and saved individually using IBM Cognos Report Studio. After the save, the IBM Cognos Report Specification is written to the IBM Cognos Content Store with the new schema version.

Option 2: A Content Maintenance task can be created to bulk upgrade the IBM Cognos Report specifications using the following steps:

    1. Open IBM Cognos Connection in your web browser.
    2. In the upper-right corner, click Launch, IBM Cognos Administration.
    3. On the Configuration tab, click Content Administration.
    4. Click the arrow on the new content maintenance button on the toolbar, and then click New Report Upgrade
    5. Type a name for the upgrade task and, if you want, a description and screen tip. Click Next.
    6. Select the packages and locations for the report specification you want to upgrade. Click Next.

Note: If you upgrade report specifications by package, all reports in the content store that are based on the model in the package will be upgraded. If you upgrade report specifications by folder, all reports in the folder will be upgraded.
    7. Choose one of the following options:
      • 'Save and run once' opens the run with options page.
      • 'Save and schedule' opens the scheduling tool.
      • 'Save' only allows you to save the upgrade so that you can run it at a later time.

For more information on scheduling report upgrades, please refer to the "Upgrade Report Specifications" section within the online help.
