Run performance tests as non-admin user

Question & Answer

Question

Can you run IBM Rational Performance Tester (RPT) as a normal user?

Cause

You think it is saver that users use the tools as normal user rather than administrator.

Answer

It is not a requirement to run RPT as an administrator for testing. You do need the privilege to modify the registry. This is necessary for recording.

The Rational Performance testing tools are designed to be testing tools as opposed to applications for general use. As such, the assumption is that testers use the tools in testing and development environments. In these environments you do not affect the production environment.

Certain operation do require administrative rights. Examples include

  • Modifying the eclipse.ini.

  • Updating RPT.

WORKAROUND
The unsupported workaround is to change the attributes of the folders that you need access to. Use Process Explorer to discover which folders you need to change.
