When attempting to run the same report from report studio run with options and export to excel 2002 the output file size is 10.6MB and when we export to Excel 2007 the report output size is 1.5MB. as stated above report dataservice Governor limit is set to 20MB. but still getting the error while running this report in Cognos For Microsoft Office.

Symptom

Error code RDS-ERR-1023 when trying to run the report from Cognos for Microsoft Office in Excel.

Cause

the data size (LDX file) is likely to be larger than the Governor limit set in the advanced setting of Report Data Service, an RDS-ERR-1023 will still occur. The size of the LDX file can be about approximately 10 to 15 times of the size of a saved excel file. If the size of the output is 1.5 MB as customer indicated then up to 22.5 MB or more might be required as the Governor Limit. There is no specific recommendations of determining a safe limit as every environment is different. Note that report Data service uses the JVM memory space. Since this space is shared with other services, it is important to do the testing before coming up with an end value as setting values to high can affect other services.

Environment

Cognos 10.1.1, Cognos for Microsoft office 10.1, Windows

Diagnosing the problem

Try testing using reduced report version producing smaller report output size. Try testing increasing size for Governor limit.

Resolving the problem

Increase setting for Governor Limit value:

1. Start Cognos Connection.
2. In the upper-right corner, click Launch, Cognos Administration.
3. On the Status tab, click System.
4. In the upper-left corner of the Scorecard pane, click the arrow to view the Change view menu.
Click Services, and then click Report Data.
5. Click the arrow next to ReportDataService to view the Actions menu, and then click Set properties.
6. Click the Settings tab.
7. In the Value column, change the number for Governor limit (MB).
8. Click OK.

The size of the LDX file can be about approximately 10 to 15 times of the size of a saved cognos report output excel file. If the size of the output is for example 1.5 MB then up to 22.5 MB or more might be required as the Governor Limit. There is no specific recommendations of determining a safe limit as every environment is different. Note that report Data service uses the JVM memory space. Since this space is shared with other services, it is important to do the testing before coming up with an end value as setting values to high can affect other services.
