Installation results in "Error during "install" phase: Failed to create executable extension"

Troubleshooting


Problem

Attempts to install IBM Rational Lifecycle Integration Adapters results in an IBM Rational ClearQuest, IBM Rational Publishing Engine, or IBM Installation Manager installation error resulting in an incomplete install.

Symptom

The full error message is as follows:

Error during "install" phase:
Failed to create executable extension com.ibm.cic.agent.internal.adapters.nativeAdapter.win32.WinPlatformOperationsProvider: org.eclipse.core.runtime.CoreException: Plug-in "com.ibm.cic.agent.core.nativeInstallAdapter.win32" was unable to instantiate class "com.ibm.cic.agent.internal.adapters.nativeAdapter.win32.WinPlatformOperationsProvider".

Cause

The error can happen due to the following reasons:

  • The path to installation media is too long.
  • The product was installed by using "launchpad.exe".
  • Corrupted installation file due to download or files not being fully extracted after the download.

Resolving The Problem

Follow the appropriate instruction that corresponds to any of the causes listed above that pertain to you:

The path to installation media is too long:
Procedure: Shorten the path of the installation folder or UNC path


The product was installed by using "launchpad.exe":

Procedure: Install using a new version of Installation Manager.


Corrupted installation file:

Procedure: Re-download the product to a directory with a short path, and extract the files to a shorter path.
