Troubleshooting
Problem
User1 saves an Excel-link spreadsheet (XLS file) from within Excel 2003. User2 launches Excel 2007, and opens the XLS file. Because this file has come from Excel 2003, the file opens inside Excel's "Compatibilty Mode". User2 now makes some changes to the file, and clicks "save". The Excel window title bad says "Not Responding" and an error appears.
Symptom
The error message will vary slightly, depending on environment. For example:
Excel 2007 SP3 with Controller 8.5.0:
- Microsoft Excel - filename.xls [Compatibility Mode] (Not Responding)
Microsoft Office Excel
Microsoft Office Excel has stopped working

Cause
Limitation of third-party (Microsoft) Excel product, when using 'Compatibility Mode'.
TIP: For examples of where Excel crashes whilst saving in Compatibility Mode for other (non-IBM-related) spreadsheets, see third-party links below.
Resolving The Problem
Ensure that Excel is not in 'Compatibility Mode' when trying to save file.
Steps:
- Launch Excel 2007
- Do not logon to Controller Excel link (yet)
- Open the XLS file
- Re-save the file, but this time choose to "SAVE AS"
- Make sure you choose "XLSX" as the type, so it saves as an Excel 2007 type file (NOT compatible with Excel 2003)
- Close the spreadsheet, and re-open this new (XLSX) spreadsheet
- Check that (in the 'title bar' of Excel) it does NOT show "Compatibility Mode"
- Now logon to Controller (via the Excel-link menu item)
- Now make any changes you wish
- Click save (to test).
