Columns' descriptions are not imported when using InfoSphere DataStage ODBC Table Import

Troubleshooting

Problem

Importing table definitions from Microsoft SQL Server ® or Oracle ® databases using ODBC is not retrieving the columns' descriptions defined in table's data definition language (DDL). DataStage Designer includes a Description column for tables that suggets this information could be populated from the database but the importing is not populating this column attribute.

Cause

This is a limitation of the ODBC drivers. This standard does not support importing descriptions or user comments for any database object.

Resolving The Problem

It is not possible to import this information into DataStage by using ODBC drivers since they do not implement this functionality. For Oracle databases, the columns' description can be imported by using the Oracle Connector Stage, which uses a different set of libraries than the ODBC drivers. For other databases this information can be added manually.
