Question

What is the correct method for establishing a WebSphere MQ client connection from IBMi using the MQSERVER environment variable?

Answer

On the Server-
NOTE: This assumes the queue manager and destination queue exist.

1)You may use the SYSTEM.DEF.SVRCONN channel or create your own SVRCN channel.
For example: CRTMQMCHL CHLNAME(SVRCN.CHL) CHLTYPE(*SVRCN) MQMNAME(QMGRNM)

2)Start listener.
For example: STRMQMLSR PORT(1415) MQMNAME(QMGRNM)

On the Client -

1)ADDENVVAR ENVVAR(MQSERVER) VALUE('ChlName/TransportType/ConnName(port)') LEVEL(*SYS)

Where:
ChlName = SVRCN channel name on server
TransportType = TCP/LU62
ConnName = IP address or Hostname of server
Port = Listening port for queue manager on server

2)Signoff/on to enable above changes

Test PUT message
3)CALL PGM(QMQM/AMQSPUTC) PARM(QueueNm QMgrNm)

Test GET message
4)CALL PGM(QMQM/AMQSGETC) PARM(QueueNm QMgrNm)

Where:
QueueNm = Destination queue name
QMgrNm = Destination queue manager name
