SNA protocol for ITM / OMEGAMON Agent communications

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Could OMEGAMON products function without any SNA connections?

Cause

Considering removing SNA protocol from the ITM communications protocols available.

Such products as these listed below can run without using the SNA protocol.
IBM Tivoli Monitoring (or Mgmt) Services 6.2.3
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for CICS on z/OS 5.1.0
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for DB2 PM on z/OS 5.1.1
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for IMS on z/OS 5.1.0 *
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for Messaging on z/OS 7.1.0
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE on z/OS 5.1.0 *

However, if using the ETE (End-to-End) function, then they will require SNA.

* See answer below.

Answer

OMEGAMON agents that are not using ETE can use other protocols without the need for the SNA protocol. For example, the OMEGAMON XE for Mainframe Network which uses ETE, report response time metrics on resources which imply DR (Definite Response)... which requires the SNA protocol.

* OMEGAMON XE on z/OS and OMEGAMON XE for IMS have an EPILOG task. If such tasks are being run, then they require SNA for such data.
