NullPointerException Error occurs in workbench wizard

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to set up a Development and Test Environment using the IBM InfoSphere MDM Server Workbench wizard results in a NullPointerException error.

Symptom

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Click on File -> New -> Other -> InfoSphere Master Data Management Server -> Development and Test Environment and click Next.

The following error is received:

The selected wizard could not be started.
Plug-in "com.ibm.mdm.config.external.automation" was unable to instantiate class "com.ibm.mdm.config.external.automation.actions.MDMAutomationImportWizard".
java.lang.NullPointerException

Cause

The development and test environment setup wizard does not have write access to the workbench install location.

There are several factors that determine whether an application has write access to the install locations on Windows. For example, the wizard may not have write access:
- If the installation was performed using an administrator account, but the workbench is launched using a normal user account.
- If the "User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations" local security policy is set to Disabled.

Resolving The Problem

In order to avoid the NullPointerException error, make sure the user running the workbench is able to write to the workbench install location.

To run the workbench, IBM recommends installing into a directory that is not virtualized. For example, install IBM Rational Software Architect and IBM InfoSphere MDM Server Workbench to C:\IBM\RSA
