Server mapping to wwwrootbes breaks client gathering

Problem(Abstract)

The following article explains the symptoms and error messages that occur when the mapping of the server to the wwwrootbes folder is broken.

Symptom

All clients unable to gather and report and start to grey out in the console.


Cause

Mapping to wwwrootbes maintained in registry keys has broken (this could have been caused during an upgrade of the server components).

Diagnosing the problem

The following error messages will recur in the BESRelay.log on the server:
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 13:13:49 -0400 - DatabasePropagator (1120) - File error "class FileNotFoundError" on "C:\Program Files (x86)\BigFix Enterprise\BES Server\wwwrootbes\bfmirror\bfsites\manydirlists_2\__mdirlist_262d725ef63cc33f0068ba4a53169ee3c16890de": Windows Error 00000002: The system cannot find the file specified.
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 13:13:49 -0400 - DatabasePropagator (1120) - Disconnecting from database; will reconnect in 10 seconds.

The following error message will recur in the client logs for the client on the server when the client goes to gather the actionsite:
At 11:02:39 -0400 - actionsite (http://BIGFIXSERVER:52311/cgi-bin/bfgather.exe/actionsite)
FAILED to Synchronize - Tivoli Endpoint Manager could not verify the authenticity of the site content. - class NotASignedMessage - gather url - http://127.0.0.1:52311/cgi-bin/bfenterprise/BESGatherMirror.exe?url=http://BIGFIXSERVER:52311/cgi-bin/bfgather.exe/actionsite&Time=19Jun11:02:39&rand=86ff9d46&ManyVersionSha1=da39a3ee5e6b4b0d3255bfef95601890afd80709

Resolving the problem

To resolve the problem:
1. Determine where the wwwrootbes folder on the server is.
2. Update the following registry keys with the full path to the wwwrootbes folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\Enterprise Server
REG_SZ: wwwRootFolder

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\EnterpriseClient\Settings\Client\_BESRelay_HTTPServer_ServerRootPath
REG_SZ: value

For example, if the wwwrootbes folder is located at D:\Data\wwwrootbes
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\Enterprise Server
REG_SZ: wwwRootFolder = D:\Data\wwwrootbes\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BigFix\EnterpriseClient\Settings\Client\_BESRelay_HTTPServer_ServerRootPath
REG_SZ: value = D:\Data\wwwrootbes\

Restart the BES Root Server and BESClient service on the server for the settings to take effect quicker.

As a master console operator, take a blank action to all computers in the deployment.
