How to add an execution environment to a node

Question & Answer

Question

How can you nest an execution environment within a node in IBM Rational Software Architect (RSA)?

Cause

Although it is possible to right click on an execution environment in the Project Explorer and add a node to the execution environment, it is unclear how you can add an execution environment to a node.

Answer

ANSWER

Follow these steps to add an execution environment to a node:

  1. Create a Topology model

  2. Add a Node, Execution Environment, and Deployment Diagram to the model

  3. Drag the Node onto the diagram

  4. Right click on the Node and select Filters > Show/Hide Compartments > All Compartments, so that all the Node's compartments will be visible

  5. Drag the Execution Environment from the Project Explorer to the Nested nodes compartment of the Node on the diagram

Result: The Execution Environment is now nested within the Node in the Project Explorer.
