Abstract
Microsoft has issued a high priority software update to address a problem with their Volume Shadowcopy Service that can cause corrupted backup copies.
Content
Microsoft has issued a high priority software update (fix) titled Backup files that are created by using the Windows Volume Shadow Copy feature are corrupted in Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.This update fixes a defect in Microsoft's Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS) system provider that can cause backup copies read from a VSS snapshot to be corrupted.
This problem can affect any backup application that uses the Microsoft Windows Volume Shadowcopy Service system provider. This includes the following Tivoli Storage Manager products:
- Tivoli Storage Manager for Microsoft Windows Backup-Archive Client
- Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Windows
- Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server
- Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases: Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server
Note that although Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack uses VSS, it is not affected by this problem.
Since this problem is not the result of an error in Tivoli Storage Manager code, there is no Tivoli Storage Manager fixing level to install. Users should install the Microsoft fix using Windows Update, which is built into the operating system. Users with automatic update enabled receive the fix automatically. Users who disable automatic update need to apply the fix manually.
Further questions about this Microsoft issue should be directed to Microsoft support.
