Out of memory errors might occur when you use dynamic cache data grids or indexes on IBM DataPower XC10 appliances with IBM eXtremeMemory enabled

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

If you use dynamic cache data grids or indexes on IBM DataPower XC10 appliances with the transport and storage mode set to "XIO with IBM eXtreme Memory," then out of memory errors can occur and cause you to lose cached data.

Symptom

Dynamic cache data grids and Java clients that connect to IBM DataPower XC10 appliances with the transport and storage mode set to XIO with IBM eXtreme Memory might experience TargetNotAvailableException exceptions and lose cached data. The Message Center might also indicate that container server processes have restarted.

Diagnosing the problem

To determine if you are experiencing this problem, complete the following steps:

  1. Check the transport and storage mode.
    1. In the monitoring console, confirm that the transport and storage mode of the appliance is configured to XIO with IBM eXtreme Memory. Click Collective > Collective Settings > Communication Services.
    2. Confirm that the transport and storage mode is configured to XIO with IBM eXtremeMemory.
  2. Check for the use of dynamic cache data grids or Java clients that use indexes.
  3. Look for any out of memory errors or conditions in the IBM DataPower XC10 Appliance.
    1. In the monitoring console, retrieve the log data for the appliance. Click Appliance > Troubleshooting > Logging.
    2. Click Download log files to save all the available log data to your file system.
    3. Inspect the log data for files named heapdump.*.phd or javacore.*.txt.
    4. Inspect javacore.*.txt files for the following message:
1TISIGINFO     Dump Event "systhrow" (00040000) Detail "java/lang/OutOfMemoryError" "Java heap space" received
Inspect the SystemOut.log files of container server processes for "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError"
    5. Inspect the SystemOut.log files of container server processes for the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError error.

Resolving the problem

To resolve this problem, complete the following steps to configure the transport and storage mode of the IBM DataPower XC10 Appliance to XIO with heap memory:

  1. In the monitoring console, click Collective > Collective Settings > Communication Services.
  2. Choose XIO with heap memory for the Transport and storage mode.
  3. Click Apply changes now to save the changes to your configuration.
