Rich Media Edition: Movie profile cannot find transcoding utility on Windows

When using MediaBeacon as part of a Rich Media Edition deployment, you can create movie profiles in MediaBeacon to convert movies from one format to another. When specifying the transcoding utility that a profile uses, you might get an error that the utility cannot be found.


When saving the movie profile after specifying the location of the transcoding utility, the following error is displayed: Can't convert using selected params.

The global log also includes the following message:

MediaBeacon.Utils.ExecHelper run: ERROR: caught [Cannot run program "<program_name>": CreateProcess error=2, The system cannot find the file specified]

Resolving the problem

You can resolve this issue by completing the following steps:

  1. Edit the MediaBeacon64.ini file in the <mediabeacon_install_root>/MediaBeacon directory.
  2. In the Virtual Machine Parameters section of the file, add this property:


    This property adds a "Helper App" column in the Movie Profiles window.
  3. Restart MediaBeacon.
  4. In the MediaBeacon application interface, click Admin > Movie Profiles.
  5. Create a placeholder profile, for example "QuickTime Movie."
  6. In the Helper App area, specify the following settings:
    o Select Disable Quicktime Transcoding.
    o Select the file type for the profile, such as "webm."
    o Ensure that Automatic Outfile is deselected.
    o Enter the command line string to run when the profile is applied. For example, C:\FFmpeg\ffmpeg.exe -i %INFILE% -v -1 -y %OUTFILE%
You can manually test the path and transcoding utility before you run the profile. In this example, the FFMpeg utility takes an asset named and creates a .webm file before opening it in a browser:

C:\FFmpeg\ffmpeg.exe -i C:\ -v -1 -y C:\output.webm
