Creating an attribute in Rational Focal Point results in "Internal Server Error"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to create an attribute in IBM Rational Focal Point results in an "Internal Server Error".

Symptom

When you try to add a new attribute to large number of elements (>3000) in IBM Rational Focal Point with WebSphere Application Server results in error:

Internal Server Error

Cause

You are unable to add new attribute in Rational Focal Point because the values set for ConnectTimeout and ServerIOTimeout parameter in plugin-cfg.xml of WebSphere Application Server are not sufficient.

Resolving the problem

Increase the Connection and Server timeout as follows:

  1. Stop the IBM HTTP Server and WebSphere Application Server one by one.

  2. Open the plugin-cfg.xml file of WebSphere Application Server

  3. Verify the values set for ConnectTimeout and ServerIOTimeout parameters.
By default this will be 0 seconds.

  4. Update ConnectTimeout value to 5 seconds

  5. Update ServerIOTimeout value to 120 seconds.
The ServerIOTimeout parameter value can be increased, depending upon the load of the data to be retrieved from the database by the application.

  6. Start the WebSphere Application Server and IBM HTTP Server.

  7. Login into the WebSphere admin console and propagate the plugin to IBM HTTP Server.

  8. Re-Start both IBM HTTP Server and WebSphere Application once.
