Backup VM fails with ANS4174E RC 115 and API return code 67

Troubleshooting

Problem

VMware snapshot phase fails with error ANS9365E with API return code 67 and ANS4174E.

Cause

VMware configuration issue when Application consistent quiescing is enabled and the virtual machine has more than 7 disks attached to one SCSI controller.

Diagnosing The Problem

One possible cause for the following errors as seen in the dsmerror.log file of the client :

Creating snapshot for virtual machine 'vmname'
ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error for virtual machine 'vmname'.
TSM function name : visdkCreateVmSnapshotMoRef
TSM file : vmvisdk.cpp (4845)
API return code : 67
API error message : An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details.

ANS4174E Full VMbackup of VMware Virtual Machine 'vmname' failed with RC=115 mode=Periodic Full

is that there are not enough empty disk attachments on the VM guest itself to accommodate a snapshot requiring file system quiescing.

The root cause will be seen in the vmware.log file of the VM guest :

<timestamp>| vmx| I120: ToolsBackup: not enough empty nodes (needed 8, found 7)
<timestamp>| vmx| I120: ToolsBackup: changing quiesce state: IDLE -> DONE
<timestamp>| vmx| I120: SnapshotVMXTakeSnapshotComplete: done with snapshot 'TSM-VM Snapshot': 0
<timestamp>| vmx| I120: SnapshotVMXTakeSnapshotComplete: Snapshot 0 failed: Failed to quiesce the virtual machine (<vm id>).

Resolving The Problem

Add an additional controller to the virtual machine, so that there are sufficient empty disk nodes on the controllers for the snapshots. Check the VMware KB document link below for details.
