How to Install TM1 Client Tools on your BI Server to Allow for Cognos BI Reporting

Troubleshooting

Problem

You are having trouble, or do not know how to configure BI to report off of TM1 data.

Resolving The Problem

Prerequisite

  1. Confirm the version of TM1 that you need to connect to. Your TM1 Client install version must match that of the TM1 Server you are making a connection to.
  2. Confirm whether you must establish a CQM or a DQM connection, or BOTH.
    • If CQM, only the 32bit client drivers are required
    • If DQM, only the 64bit client drivers are required
    • If BOTH, then both the 32bit and 64bit client drivers are required
  3. Obtain your installation files
    • Example of 32bit TM1 10.1.1 Installation file: tm1client_win32_10.1.7000.91_ml.tar.gz
    • Example of 64bit TM1 10.1.1 Installation file: plananalytics_winx64h_10.1.7000.91_ml.tar.gz
  4. If using UNIX, simply set the TM1_PATH environment variable, and point it to your BI Install’s bin64 directory, ie: TM1_PATH=/path/to/ibm/cognos/bin64 . UNIX does not require the TM1 Clients to be installed.

Installing the 32bit TM1 Client Tools
  1. Extract your installation files, right-click ‘issetup.exe’ and select ‘Run as Administrator’
  2. Click ‘Next’ on the first two pages, until you are past the disclaimer
  3. Provide the Installation Directory of your choosing
  4. Be sure to select/install the ‘TM1 APIs’ component. Click ‘Next’ to continue.
Note: Although not necessary, it is wise to include TM1 Architect, to allow you to test your connection outside of BI
  5. Modify the ‘Program Folder’ as desired, clicking ‘Next’ to continue
  6. Make sure your Summary page is accurate and then click ‘Next’ to begin the installation
  7. When the installation has completed, click ‘Finish’
Note: No Cognos Configuration changes are required

You should now be able to configure a successful IBM Cognos TM1 / Compatible TM1 Datasource in BI.

Installing the 64bit TM1 Client Tools

You should now be able to configure a successful IBM Cognos TM1 / Dynamic TM1 Datasource in BI.

Setting up the TM1 Data Source in Cognos Administration
  1. Log into Cognos Connection as an Administrator user, and Navigate into Cognos Administration
  2. Click the ‘Configuration’ tab, and ensure you are in the ‘Datasource’ section
  3. Click the ‘New Data Source’ button
  4. Give your data source the name you desire, and click ‘Next’
  5. Select the ‘IBM Cognos TM1’ type.
Note: If using DQM with TM1, it is not required to ‘Configure JDBC connection’
  6. Fill in the data source details appropriately
Note: If the customer is using CAM Security with TM1 (IntegratedSecurityMode=5), you must select to use ‘An external namespace’, and select the namespace that TM1 had been secured against. This also means that the TM1 Server you are connecting to, references this SAME BI Server that you are setting your datasource up in, via the ClientCAMURI and ServerCAMURI in the TM1S.cfg file on the TM1 Server.
  7. Test your datasource connection to ensure the connection(s) is/are successful
  8. If your desired connection is successful, click ‘Close’ and ‘Finish’ to save your Data Source Connection

Note: It is not necessary to have both DQM or CQM connections testing successfully. If the customer is only using one of the two protocols, only the necessary protocol must test successfully.

If you still experience issues configuring your TM1 Datasource in BI, make sure to review the following 'Troubleshooting TM1/BI Data Source Connections' technote: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21637852
