VULNERABILITY DETAILS:

CVE IDs: CVE-2013-0809 and CVE-2013-1493

DESCRIPTION:
The vulnerabilities allow code running under a security manager to escalate its privileges by modifying or removing the security manager. Vulnerabilities could occur when the IBM JRE is installed as the system JRE, such that it may be used to execute untrusted Java applets or Web Start applications in a browser.

The Tivoli Storage Productivity Center GUI requires an IBM JRE. To meet this requirement, links are provided with the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Java Web Start page for downloading the IBM JRE for Windows, Linux, or AIX. The Tivoli Storage Productivity Center versions listed as affected contain JRE packages that need to be replaced.

This bulletin applies only for launching the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center GUI through Java Web Start on a remote machine and does not affect an installed Tivoli Storage Productivity Center GUI. It does not affect the other web-based GUIs for Tivoli Storage Productivity Center.

Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Replication is not affected.

REMEDIATION:
The following steps apply to the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center GUI launched via Java Web Start on remote systems.

  1. Uninstall any versions of Java prior to IBM Java 6 SR13.
  2. Download and install IBM Java 6 SR13 or later.
  3. Launch the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center GUI using the JNLP file and Java Web Start.

Note: Do not use the IBM JRE 1.6.0 or IBM SDK 1.6.0 links provided with the affected Tivoli Storage Productivity Center versions. Once you have upgraded your Tivoli Storage Productivity Center components to a level with the fix, you can use the links again as they will then allow you to download an updated version of IBM Java 6. Until the fix is available in a Tivoli Storage Productivity Center maintenance release, you can download the new IBM Java 6 packages directly from the IBM developerWorks web site or by contacting IBM Support.
