Problem
A Tivoli Storage Manager client running on Windows fails to backup the systemstate. The backup fails with the following errors : ANS1705E System Writers 'system writer' do not exist. ANS5283E The operation was unsuccessful.
Symptom
The schedule backup is reported as FAILED with return code of 12
Cause
The Microsoft "System Writer" component does not start.
Diagnosing The Problem
Open a Windows command prompt and run the following command to obtain the list of VSS writers currently available on Windows :
vssadmin list writers
In this example, the "System Writer" was missing. For example, the following section was missing :
Writer name: 'System Writer'
Writer Id: {...}
Writer Instance Id: {...}
State: [1] Stable
Last error: No error
Resolving The Problem
In this particular case, the Windows 'System Writer' writer was missing because it failed to initialized due to a lack of space in the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET directory. There is a known VSS defect from Microsoft Windows on this subject. The following Microsoft article describes it.
