Known Limitation: Performance issues when accessing IBM Content Navigator with Internet Explorer 8

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 to access IBM Content Navigator, you might experience a slow response for common operations.

Symptom

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 to access IBM Content Navigator, you might experience a slow response for common operations, including, but not limited to:

  • Loading the initial login screen
  • Browsing in repositories with a large number of folders
  • Browsing in folders with a large number of documents
  • Opening saved search templates
  • Running searches
  • Accessing search forms
  • Editing documents
Users might notice significantly slower response times when accessing search forms or editing documents that leverage an external data service (EDS) to integrate external choice lists in to the content authoring experience.

Cause

IBM Content Navigator is a powerful, dynamic web application built on modern web technologies such as HTML5, Cascading Style Sheets version 3 (CSS3), and JavaScript.

The HTML rendering engine in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 does not process complex HTML pages well, and the Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 JavaScript engine does not process JavaScript efficiently. These limitations of Internet Explorer 8 can severely degrade the performance of IBM Content Navigator in many scenarios.

Resolving the problem

You can improve the performance of IBM Content Navigator in the following ways:

  1. Use Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and above. The Microsoft Internet Explorer team strongly encourages the use of newer versions of Internet Explorer, which provide better web rendering and JavaScript processing performance.
  2. Use an alternative web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, to work with IBM Content Navigator. These browsers are built on more modern web rendering and JavaScript processing engines.
  3. Install the Google Chrome Frame plug-in for Internet Explorer. This plug-in enables Internet Explorer to render web pages on higher performing web rendering and JavaScript processing engines. The plug-in also enables users to add content to the repository by dragging and dropping the content from their local file systems to the web browser.

Important: The plug-in is invoked only for pages that contain a specific HTML header, which is used by IBM Content Navigator. All other web pages are rendered with the standard Internet Explorer web rendering and JavaScript processing engines.

You can learn more about the Google Chrome Frame plug-in at http://www.google.com/chromeframe.
