IFIX postinstall failure, tc-driver-manager

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempting to update TPM 7.2.1 with an IFIX, the update fails at "Automation Package Migration". The last few lines of postinstall_%date-time%.log indicate it fails when trying to load a particular tcdriver.

Symptom

2013-02-01 12:12:12,122 ERROR COPTDM151E The format for the automation package item "AutoTest" is not valid.

ERROR: automation package migration failed, exiting.
Post-installation status:
=========================
[ DONE ] Tivoli Common Agent image refresh
[ DONE ] Data migration
[ DONE ] Copy automation packages
[ FAILED ] Automation package migration
[ NOT RUN ] Import software signatures

Cause

An automation package (.tcdriver) was created in the APDE but was not properly added into the TIO_HOME/drivers repository. This causes an inconsistency in the TPM database: Descriptor tables contain references to the installed tcdriver, yet the actual .tcdriver file does not exist and cannot be verified by the tc-driver-manager tool.

Diagnosing the problem

Check the IFIX postinstall log located under the TIO_LOGS/ifix folder.

Resolving the problem

Locate the actual .tcdriver file and place it under the TIO_HOME/drivers folder. This will allow the tc-driver-manager script to verify the actual tcdriver files against the database descriptors.

If the .tcdriver file cannot be found then you need to re-create it. A tcdriver is just a standard ZIP archive.

You should be able to locate the source files under the directory: TIO_HOME/lwi/runtime/tpm/eclipse/plugins/_PKG_NAME_.

For example if the error message indicated "...package item "AutoTest" is not valid. ", then the path should be: $TIO_HOME/lwi/runtime/tpm/eclipse/plugins/AutoTest

Under this location you will find all of the generated files for the tcdriver, eg:
    [tioadmin@tpmSrv AutoTest]$ ls -l
    total 44
    -rw-r--r-- 1 tioadmin tioadmin 26 Oct 17 05:47 build.properties
    -rw-r--r-- 1 tioadmin tioadmin 1827 Oct 17 05:47 build.xml
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 doc
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 doc-src
    drwxr-xr-x 3 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 generated
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 META-INF
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 repository
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 TC-INF
    drwxr-xr-x 3 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 wkfclasses
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Oct 16 08:58 workflow
    drwxr-xr-x 2 tioadmin tioadmin 4096 Feb 22 2012 xml

Zip up the directories and files into an zip archive and then rename it with a tcdriver extension, eg "AutoTest.tcdriver". You can then place this .tcdriver file into the TIO_HOME/drivers directory and try the IFIX install again. The postinstall can continue and recover from this error - no backup/restore operations will need to be performed.
