Executing RPT and RFT tests simultaneously on the same machine

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Can you execute tests on IBM Rational Performance Tester (RPT) and IBM Rational Functional Tester (RFT) simultaneously on a single machine?

Cause

Since the combination of RPT 7.3 and Rational Robot 7.0.1 causes 100% CPU spikes when running on the same playback machine (which is why it is not supported), you need to know if simultaneous testing with RPT and RFT on a single machine would cause similar issues.

Answer

Yes, RFT and RPT scripts can be executed simultaneously on a system successfully.

The co-existence of RFT and RPT has been tested in following environment.

  • Windows 7 OS machine with 8Gb RAM and Processor speed 2.19Ghz .
  • RPT version 8.5
  • RFT version 8.3
After running few tests to monitor the CPU utilization while RPT tests to be ongoing ( 12 user schedule), it was observed that the maximum usage of CPU was 41% (that too in only one instance) .

Note: As a best practice, IBM Rational still recommends RFT and RPT to be installed in different package group even this combination works fine.
