Job recovery rerun with abendprompt reruns forever after applying a fixpack

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

The introduction of an APAR changes the behavior of jobs that are defined to RERUN and include an ABENDPROMPT property as their recovery action.

Symptom

Prior to Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) v8.4 Fix Pack (FP) 06, TWS v8.5 FP02, and TWS v8.5.1 FP02, some jobs rerun once, but after the mentioned Fix Pack or later is installed, those same jobs start rerunning without bounds.

Cause

Formerly, a job defined with a recovery of RERUN and with an ABENDPROMPT with a colon (:) pre-pending the prompt would automatically respond "YES" to the prompt and rerun only once. After applying one of the above Fix Packs or later the same job will continue to rerun over and over if it continues to abend.

Sample job definition:

FTA1#JOB1

SCRIPTNAME "/tmp/testscript1"
STREAMLOGON maestro
DESCRIPTION "Test Job1"
TASKTYPE UNIX
RECOVERY RERUN
ABENDPROMPT ":JOB1 ABENDED!!!"

This is the APAR that introduced the change:
IZ86029: PROMPT TEXT BEGIN WITH A COLON (:), REQUIRES INTERVENTION.

Resolving the problem

If you prefer the behavior of a single rerun after an abend, then remove the "ABENDPROMPT ..." property from the job definition.

Example:

FTA1#JOB1
SCRIPTNAME "/tmp/testscript1"
STREAMLOGON maestro
DESCRIPTION "Test Job1"
TASKTYPE UNIX
RECOVERY RERUN
