Processing Elements (PEs) fail to start on InfoSphere Streams Version 3.x for Power Linux

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Processing Elements (PEs) do not start on InfoSphere Streams Version 3.x for Power Linux. After increasing the HC.PecStartTimeout timeout value the PEs still do not start.

Symptom

PEs fail to start within any HC.PecStartTimeout value with symptoms similar to those described in the InfoSphere Streams Information Center topic "Processing element startup problems": http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/streams/v3r0/topic/com.ibm.swg.im.infosphere.streams.pd.doc/doc/ibminfospherestreams-troubleshooting-pe-startup-timeout-problems.html

The instance log file "hc.stdouterr" contains information describing a SIGNAL SIGTERM with backtrace information that contains entries similar to this:

/opt/at5.0/lib64/libtcmalloc.so.4(_ZN8SpinLock8SlowLockEv-0x2718c) [0xfff9e4435e4]

Cause

An issue with Advance Toolchain versions prior to 5.0-9 can result in PEs not successfully starting.

Environment

Streams applications running on IBM InfoSphere Streams Version 3.x for Power Linux where version 5.0-7 or 5.0-8 of the Advance Toolchain are installed.

Resolving the problem

Install an updated version of the Advance Toolchain RPMs. The currently recommended version is 5.0-10.
