UAC on Windows Machine prevents authentication into RTC

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to login to a fresh install of IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC) on Windows system results in failed login attempt.

Symptom

Logging into the new install as the default ADMIN username fails.

  • In the tomcat catalina.log the following exception will be observed.
Throwable occurred: java.io.IOException: Cannot rename original file to ..\server\tomcat\conf\tomcat-users.xml.old

Cause

Windows user account control (UAC) has prevented Apache Tomcat from deploying correctly and the user database is not properly initialized.

Environment

Windows environments with UAC such as Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008.

Resolving the problem

To resolve this error, UAC will need to be disabled or the level reduced. The following instructions document how to perform this task:

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel

  2. Navigate to User Accounts

  3. Reduce the UAC level

  4. Reboot the Windows Machine for the settings to come into affect

Attempt to run RTC again. If the failure persists, continue to reduce the UAC level until you can login to the RTC server. Note that this may require disabling UAC entirely.
