ANR8779E error number=13 with tape drive
A Tivoli Storage Manager server is configured with an IBM library and drives. When the server tries to open tape drive to mount a volume, the ANR8779E error is received.
For example, on a Solaris operating system, the following errors are logged in the Tivoli Storage Manager server activity log :
ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt/19st, error number=13.
ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt/20st, error number=13.
Diagnosing the problem
The "errnor number=13" is an error returned by the operating system which means :
Permission denied - EACCES
In this example, it means that the server instance userid does not have permissions to access the tape drives identified by the /dev/rmt/19st and /dev/rmt/20st special device file names.
Examine the tape device special files and verify the ownership and permissions for the tape device names. For example :
ls -la /dev/rmt/*st
crwxr-xr-x 1 root root 310, 1 Jun 8 14:35 19st
crwxr-xr-x 1 root root 310, 3 Jun 8 14:35 20st
In this example, it shows that only the root userid has read and write access to the tape drives.
Resolving the problem
Use the unix chmod and chown commands to give read and write permissions to the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance userid so it has authority to access the tape drives. For example, if the server is run with the tsminst1 instance userid which belongs to the tsmsrvs group, the following commands may be used to give proper authority to the devices :
chown tsminst1.tsmsrvs /dev/rmt/19st
chown tsminst1.tsmsrvs /dev/rmt/20st
