Socket Exhaustion Due to High Ark Activity

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Why are you unable to manage your ESXi 4.1 host with Virtual Server Protection installed?

Answer

This problem is due to socket exhaustion on the ESXi host. This problem can be experienced after a large (hundred of virtual machines in testing) power cycling of ARK(anti-rootkit)-protected virtual machines.

There are several workarounds. One, rebooting the ESXi host will resolve the issue. Sometimes restarting management services on the ESXi host will resolve the problem, but when it doesn't a reboot is necessary.

Another option is using a different version of ESX in your environment. ESX 4.1 and ESXi 5.0 do not exhibit this behavior.
