WP 8.0 Silent Install fails when run as non-root user

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

When installing WebSphere Portal through RAF, the install fails as the Portal Media chmod's the install root to 550 and 555 as part of the install process. The chmod operation (which is part of the portal media scripts), results in only allowing root to perform the operation. Any other user is blocked when attempting to run the install.

Websphere Portal 8 /ibm_media/<OS>/wp/80/install_image/Setup/eimage
] $ cat repository.config
LayoutPolicy=Composite
LayoutPolicyVersion=0.0.0.1
repository.url.WAS8003=../../WAS
indicates that the WAS media is bundled within wp. This is used during the manual install of wp also.

Symptom

Errors to look for.

304 12/4/12 3:08 PM EXEC
305 12/4/12 3:08 PM EXEC Total time: 22 seconds

This is the most important error to record while installing WP 8.0 In the bold you see where the repository.config does not exist and to please fix your media tree. This indicates an error pertaining to permissions.

During the Install Response File being Created for IBM Installation manager the following error is seen.
/export/rafw/product/actions/install/im/common/install_im_common.xml:703: Install using IBM Installation Manager failed: ERROR: The com.ibm.websphere.ND.v80 package specified in the /export/rafw/work/SB2/cells/cwo142stpCell02/nodes/node01/was80_install_node01_response.txt file cannot be found.

RAFW is currently only looking for ND Deployment media and not Stand Alone. The RAF team has been made aware of this and the issue is currently being worked on in the following APAR PM77534.

The install then appears to just end. An example is given below. No other information is provided.

EXEC end [/home/rafwdadm@TEST]

Cause

Portal Media chmod's the install root to 550 and 555 as part of the install process.

Environment

Linux/Unix

Resolving the problem

Workaround:
There is only one way to work around this issue without installing the patch below and that is to run the install as a user with administrative privileges (e.g. root on Linux/Unix).

There is a tech note available that described the issue in more detail.
