Incorrect Status on AIX Interfaces

Technote (FAQ)

Question

At times AIX interfaces can cause incorrect status indications.

Cause

In discovery, for SNMP supported devices, netmon relies on ifIndex to get the correct information for the interfaces.

On AIX, SNMP gets the order of interfaces by reading kernel memory directly. So the order is determined by the order in which the interface(ethernet adapter) is configured. If you remove an adapter and configure it again, it is moved to the end of the line.

If that happens, netmon daemon cannot update the NetView database to match that change. This mismatch of indexes can cause the wrong status report for the interfaces.

Answer

NetView status reporting can be corrected by re-discovering the AIX node.
