Sending Team Invitation results in 'Could not find the Project Area' error

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Attempts to send a Team Invitation email results in "Could not find the Project Area" error when using IBM Rational Team Concert.

Symptom

After adding a new user to a Team Area, an invitation is sent to the user notifying them that they have been added to the Team Area. In this case, the invitation is not sent due to the following error:

Could not find the project area specified in the team invitation:
ProjectAreaName= Example Project Area 123 teamAreaPath=/Testing Team

The team invitation is displayed similar to that below:
teamRepository=https://<server>:9443/ccm/
userId=<userID>
userName= <Last Name, First Name>
ProjectAreaName= Example Project Area 123 teamAreaPath=/Testing Team

Cause

This error is caused by the ProjectAreaName and teamAreaPath residing on the same line. In a team invitation which succeeds, the invitation should look similar to the following:
teamRepository=https://<server>:9443/ccm/
userId=<userID>
userName= <Last Name, First Name>
ProjectAreaName= Example Project Area 123
teamAreaPath=/Testing Team

This behavior is caused by Defect 287816 in Microsoft Outlook which removes line breaks.

Environment

Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007,2010

Resolving the problem

In Outlook, ensure that "Unwrap text" / "Restore extra line breaks" is unselected from the Settings. Please note that this change will need to be made on each client individually who are sending or receiving team invitations.

Alternatively, you can edit the Group Policy/Registry Settings as described in the following Microsoft Forum post. NOTE: Any changes made to the registry are done so at your own risk. Consult your Outlook or system administrator before making these changes.

Directions to enable extra line breaks in Outlook:

For Outlook 2010:

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. On the File tab, click Options.

  3. In the Options dialog, click Mail.

  4. In the Message format section, clear the Remove extra line breaks in plain text messages check box.

  5. Click OK.

For Outlook 2007 or earlier versions:
  1. Open Outlook.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  3. On the Preferences tab, click the E-mail Options button.

  4. Click to clear the Remove extra line breaks in plain text messages check box.

  5. Click OK two times.
