Can we use backup taken using ontape, or onbar on a certain version of Informix Dynamic Server, to restore on a different version of Informix Dynamic Server?

Answer

No, we cannot use backup taken using ontape, or onbar on certain version of Informix Dynamic Server to restore data on a different version of Informix Dynamic Server.

We can use utilities like unload/load, dbexport/dbimport or High performance load (HPL), if we need to take backup and restore it on a different version of Informix Dynamic Server.

The process of moving data from one onstance to another, using backup taken by ontape, or onbar is called imported restore. For more information on imported restore please refer to the section below.
