.sav files having periods (.) show up as $null$ in Modeler

Question

When a .sav file contain periods for values, why is that value displayed as $null$ when read by Modeler?

Answer

Periods within a .sav file is essentially a null value for numeric variable when viewed within STATS. Recoding a null to substitute another value in place can be done within STATS. Also, within Modeler multiple data manipulation options can be done on null values if this $null$ is not desired..
