Tracing profiling tools in Rational Application Developer

Problem(Abstract)

I am experiencing issues when profiling Java applications in Rational Application Developer and would like to collect debug traces to submit to IBM support.

Resolving the problem

To collect trace information for the profiling functionality in Rational Application Developer v8.0.2 or newer releases:

  1. Open a command prompt and set the following environment variables:

    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG=true
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_OUTPUT=CONSOLE|FILE
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_PRINT_CONSOLE_IN=true
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_PRINT_CONSOLE_OUT=true
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_PRINT_DATA_IN=true
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_PRINT_DATA_OUT=true
    set TPTP_MSG_DEBUG_PRINT_MESSAGES=true
    set TPTP_OUTPUT_FORMAT=xml

    set HYADES_EXEC_MSG_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_PROCESS_LAUNCH_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_CONSOLE_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_INC_CMD_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_OUT_CMD_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_DATA_DEBUG=true
    set HYADES_MSG_DEBUG_OUTPUT=file

  2. Change to the Rational Application Developer installation directory. (The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP.) For example, enter:

    cd C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP
  3. Start Rational Application Developer from the command line:

    eclipse.exe
  4. Reproduce the failing scenario. Two log files are generated:
    • C:\hyades-msg-debug.log
    • C:\tptp-msg-debug.log
