SFTP url-open() might attempt to create files with non-unique names when appliances have the same serial number

Technote (FAQ)

Question

In what circumstances might the SFTP url-open() extension element attempt to create non-unique file names?

Cause

The SFTP url-open() extension element triggers a unique file name from the SFTP Policy, in the User Agent, when writing a file. This file name is the appliance serial number followed by an incrementing integer.

Generating a unique SFTP file name assumes that the appliance serial number is unique because the file naming convention uses the serial number. The algorithm might cause an issue in the following circumstances:

  • Two clients on the same appliance write to the same SFTP server directory
  • Two clients on different appliances that have the same serial number write to the same SFTP server directory

Note that the issue exists only when multiple appliances with identical serial numbers attempt to write uniquely named files to the same directory on the same SFTP server.

Answer

Serial numbers might be duplicated on appliance that are different hardware types, for example Type 7199 and Type 9235.

Therefore, in an environment different appliance types, do not use this feature to generate unique file names. Instead, use better methods of generating unique file names.
