Tivoli Storage Manager server fails to format database with rc=499

Troubleshooting


Problem

A Tivoli Storage Manager server in installed on Windows. The Tivoli Storage Manager server instance upgrade wizard is used to upgrade the server. The upgrade wizard fails to format the new server instance database with rc=499.

Cause

Sophos antivirus interfering with the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance

Diagnosing The Problem

Examine the "c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\dsmupgdx.trc" file to get more information on the format failure. For example :

Resolving The Problem

In this case, the Sophos antivirus was installed on the Windows machine. The Sophos antivirus was interfering with the format process as it was accessing the database files being created.
Configure the Sophos antivirus to not scan the Tivoli Storage Manager instance database and files
or disable the Sophos antivirus where appropriate and rerun the upgrade wizard.
