Depending on the directory structure of the previously installed version of IBM Content Analytics with Enterprise Search or OmniFind Enterprise Edition, configuration files and indexes in the data directory might be deleted when you upgrade to a newer product version.
This problem can occur when the data directory (ES_NODE_ROOT) is located under the installation directory (ES_INSTALL_ROOT) at a depth that is deeper than one level.
For example, if your existing version is installed with the following directory layout, configuration files and indexes are deleted when you upgrade to a newer product version:
If the data directory is installed directly under the ES_INSTALL_ROOT directory, the data is preserved when you upgrade. For example, the following directory layout is not affected by this problem:
Impact to customers
If no backup image of the previous installation exists, you must reconfigure the IBM Content Analytics with Enterprise Search or OmniFind Enterprise Edition server. You must also recrawl and re-index your previously crawled and indexed data. (The system creates an index of data that gets added to collections, but it does store the original data.)
Default installation paths are not affected
If you accepted the default installation paths when installing the product, this problem does not occur. In the default layout on UNIX platforms, the program execution code and data files are located in separate directories and ES_NODE_ROOT is not located in ES_INSTALL_ROOT. On Windows, the default location of ES_NODE_ROOT is directly under ES_INSTALL_ROOT.
Affected upgrade paths
This problem can occur in the following upgrade scenarios:
- From OmniFind Enterprise Edition V8.5 to V9.1
- From OmniFind Enterprise Edition V9.1 to IBM Content Analytics with Enterprise Search V3.0
- From IBM Cognos Content Analytics V2.1 to IBM Content Analytics V2.2
- From IBM Content Analytics V2.2 to IBM Content Analytics with Enterprise Search V3.0
Fix pack installations are not affected
The installation of fix packs is not affected by this problem.
