Backup failure "Send File To Media Exception"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

Tivoli Storage Manager for Microsoft Sharepoint backup fails with message:
Error:Send File To Media Exception

Diagnosing the problem

The failure can occur with granular or platform backup. From the job report, the following error message is logged:

Error:Send File To Media Exception, FullPath: Farm\FirstMediaConn
Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Review the agent event logs for a more detailed error message:

It will try again.: No such host is known

The error message from the agent log indicated that there is a connection problem between the agent and the manager. Test that a telnet connection from the agent to the manager on port 22001, which is the default port for media service, is successful.

Resolving the problem

Check the window hosts file on the manager to see if the host name is specified. It should be in this format:

xx.xx.xx.xx host.name.domain.etc

where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of the manager, host.name.domain.etc is the DNS host name.

The hosts file is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

If the host name is not specified in the hosts file, you need to use the IP address instead of the host name in the agent configuration tool on the agent system.
