ManageItem API should provide equal character set (length) for English as well as native (local) language.

Technote (FAQ)

Question

Why doesn't ManageItem API provide equal character set (length) for English as well as native (local) language?

Cause

ManageItem API allows us to translate the item description in the desired local language.

But the character set provided for English description is higher compared to the character set provided for local language description.

Answer

ManageItem API allows us to translate the item description in the desired local language.

But the character set provided for English description is higher compared to the character set provided for local language description.
i.e

Under Primary Information --> Description --> which is the description of the item is defined as a string (Max length : 500)
also Primary Information --> Short Description --> which is the short description of the item is defined as a string (Max length : 200)

where as

Under Language Description --> Description --> which is a localized description is defined as a string (Max length : 200)
also Language Description --> Short Description --> which is a short description is defined as a string (Max length : 100)

In the above mentioned scenario the fields must have equal size as they would be a translation from English language to native language.
Hence this is accepted as a defect and shall be fixed in the future releases.
