ITCAMfTx ISM - SNMP monitoring fails with "Warning: Error in packet"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

ISM agent, and its SNMP monitor part, fails with following message in snmp.log:
Warning: Error in packet - reason - (noSuchName) There is no such variable name in this MIB.

Cause

The OidGroup definition, setup in the snmp monitor profile, is likely to be set incorrectly.
A trailing .0 (instance) is still missing in the oid specified in the OidGroup.

Environment

ITCAM for Transactions 7.3 on AIX 6.1 with Internet Services Monitoring agent

Resolving the problem

As the object is a scalar, you must append a 0 to the oid.

So change in the oidgroup from for example
.1.2.5.1.5.1.1244.1.6.4.4

to :
.1.2.5.1.5.1.1244.1.6.4.4.0

Adding .0 is completely normal and standard in SNMP protocol.
The last bit of an OID is an instance. So when you query a scalar (single value), it does not have instances, so you must append .0 on the end.

From "Essential SNMP" :
If you request a scalar object from a private MIB, you must append .0 to the OID. Without the .0 is it an invalid OID

Furthermore:
If there are timed out messages in snmp.log: "Timed out while waiting for response", you first need to check the used port.
"Timed out" occurs, if you have port 162 (the snmp-trap port) in place.
Use port 161 (snmp default port) instead.
